BINTI (2020) Trailer – 2021 New African Film Festival
A meditation on contemporary African womanhood unfolding in four chapters, BINTI (Swahili for "young woman") tells the intertwined tales of four women living in Dar-es-Salaam. We enter the story through Tumaini (Bertha Robert), a fledgling small-business owner whose traumatic past collides with her present reality when an ill-advised scheme goes awry. Enter Angel (Maggie Munisi), an alluring beauty with a fairytale existence that is slowly revealed to be rotting at its core. Stella (Helen Hartmann) and Rose (Godliver Gordian) round out the four chapters as they navigate the complexities of marriage, motherhood and great expectations. With an all-woman filmmaking team led by Tanzanian director Seko Shamte (HOMECOMING, MKWAWA), BINTI pays tribute to the perseverance of women in Tanzania and across the world. (Note adapted from the Pan African Film Festival.) Official Selection, 2021 Pan African Film Festival. DIR/SCR/PROD Seko Shamte; SCR/PROD Angela Ruhinda, from a story by Maria Shoo; PROD Alinda Ruhinda. Tanzania, 2020, color, 105 min. In English and Swahili with English subtitles. NOT RATED
