A short film that displays the diverse array of plant and animal life within the African savanna ecosystem, explaining the vital roles that many species play and highlighting the importance of preserving this habitat.

This was a special project. It involved many people from the townships just out of the Port Elizabeth area, such as Joe Slovo and Kwamagxaki. This film was the result of a 3 week filmmaking class involving a small group of 15 and 16yr olds with no filmmaking experience. The class was provided a space for lecturing and sponsorship by the non-profit organization ArtWorksForYouth. Many of the kids and I spent everyday walking many miles to our locations. They chose to shoot the dinner scene in one of their teachers houses instead of one of their own because they wanted to show a house that they all hope to be able to live in one day. They wanted to tell a positive story, a story that preached a message of hope.

Known as the Siddis, their ancestors originated from the Great Lakes region before being captured and brought to India as Arab slaves. When slavery was outlawed in the 18th and 19th centuries, the Siddis feared persecution and retreated into the forests, where they have been living ever since. I've wanted to make an animated short film based around the life-cycle of an Autodale citizen/family for a very long time. We've only ever seen Autodale through the eyes of children. All of the other short films in the series focus on skeptical children being successfully brainwashed/indoctrinated into complacency with Autodale's dystopian ways. This short film doesn't have that arc. This short film is about the parents. These characters have NO DOUBTS about how this system works anymore...

The road is the only place where I find stability, the unknown is my home. Whatever the means, no matter how and for how long, the main thing is that I am moving.
Africa at the beginning was only a hint of a dream, and as time went on and I became more mature, most of Africa was transformed into a call that I decided to obey, throwing myself into the most extraordinary adventure: a tour of Africa on foot, hitchhiking, and cycling!
January 2015 marked the beginning of the adventure, and so far, I have traveled to 17 countries including Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Bénin, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Somaliland, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania & Zanzibar, almost all without any money! I plan to continue until I reach South Africa.
You’re probably wondering how I finance my trip…
I usually work odd jobs on the way, sometimes I am a fisherman, a guide, or even a seller … my resourcefulness never leaves me empty-handed
At the end of my trip, I am planning to make a movie about my journey. First, I want to tell my story and how I crossed this entire continent from one corner to another, and how I was able to realize my dream despite starting from nothing. Second, I want to contribute towards changing the average person’s perspective about Africa, and convey vivid stories that show the continent’s beauty and diversity, especially from an African point of view.
